Description
Biography/History: Beatriz Silva Topete served in the United States military as a young woman, raised three children, and, after becoming active in local politics, was recruited by Miguel Contreras to work with UNITE HERE Local 11. She has worked on the union’s political program, with community and clergy outreach, and on worker organizing campaigns. At the time of the interview, she was working as a director for the union in Orange County, where she helped organize the Disney campaign.
Scope/Content: Interview Contents: Work with UNITE HERE Local 11, beginning in 1998 — Susan Minato’s mentorship — Work as a community organizer helping Local 11 with a campaign at the University of Southern California — Recruiting Reverend James Lawson Jr.’s support for the campaign and taking a class on nonviolence with him at UCLA — Decision to stay with Local 11 — Becoming a leader — Local 11’s growth and increased political influence — Raise LA campaign and living wage campaigns in Santa Monica, in Long Beach, and at Los Angeles International Airport — Disney campaign — Challenges of organizing unorganized workers.
