Text written on photo: "American ship Wm. P. Frye. First American vessel sunk by Germans." Text written underneath: "Ship Wm. P. Frye. This is the first American ship sailing under the flag of the United States sunk by a German Submarine." Photo shows the William P. Frye, actually not a ship but a four-masted bark, at sea.
