Photograph was edited for publication purposes Pierre Salinger was born on June 14, 1925. He served as White House Press Secretary to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. Salinger served as a United States Senator in 1964 from August to December after the death of Clair Engle. He was defeated by Republican George Murphy for the Senate seat in November 1964. Salinger was manager for the Robert F. Kennedy presidential campaign and later became known for his work as an ABC News correspondent. He died on October 16, 2004. First photograph caption dated August 4, 1964 reads "Former presidential press secretary Pierre Salinger strikes a match--and a typical pose--as he answers questions of newsmen during 'Salinger's Day in the Valley.' The candidate for U.S. Senate has been happily described as looking like an 'ambulatory, cigar smoking fireplug.' He made an even dozen appearances here yesterday."; Second photograph caption dated April 25, 1964 reads "New Senator. Cigar-smoking Pierre Salinger is California's new Democratic senator, filling the vacancy caused by the death of Clair Engle last week. Gov. Edmund G. Brown made announcement of the appointment today at a press conference in Sacramento."
