Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Made possible and accessible through the generous support of the Security Pacific National Bank, Sunlaw Cogeneration Partners, Photo Friends, California Council for the Humanities, the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation, and the John Randolph Haynes and Dora Haynes Foundation.

Gulnar Gokalp was born in 1947 in Turkey. In Ankara, she studied Turkish language and literature and worked as a librarian and high school teacher. Around 1970, Gulnar met Naci, who would become her husband, at the library of the Supreme Court in Ankara. Together, in 1987, they moved to Los Angeles for Gulnar’s assignment as education attaché at the Consulate General Republic of Turkey. In 1992, Gulnar began working as a math and special education teacher at Palms Middle School and continued her education at California State University, Northridge where she studied mild and moderate learning disabilities. Naci, who earned his MBA in finance while living in Turkey, worked as an accountant in Los Angeles.
