Relief on the map is shown by hachures, and states are represented with varying colors of pink, green, blue, and yellow. The top border with Canada and the lower border with Mexico is outlined in red. The map shows railroads, rivers, capitals, cities and Indian lands. Towards the bottom of the print are engraved views showing images of American history. As described in the key titled “Description of the Engravings Below,” the images range from Columbus’s discovery of America in 1492, ending with “Fulton’s First Steamboat shown to an Indian,” in the 19th century. “Entered according to Act of Congress, by Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning, in the year 1855, in the Clerk’s office of the District Court for the Southern District of New York.” – text, bottom left
