Title supplied by cataloger. The Belmont Learning Center, also known as the "Vista Hermosa Learning Center", "Central Los Angeles High School #11", as well as the "City West Project" - and finally renamed the "Edward R. Roybal Learning Center" in March 2008 - is a high school and park located at 1200 Colton Street and Beaudry. Built to relieve overcrowding at nearby Belmont High School, this new school sits on 33.5 acres and cost approximately $202,305,125 to complete. With 104 classrooms, it can accommodate 2,500 students serving grades 9-12. A separate building on the campus accommodates a library, cafeteria, auditorium and parent/student center. A 3,000-seat gymnasium with locker rooms as well as outdoor athletic facilities are included on the site, making this one of the more luxurious schools of the urban sections of the district. Adjacent to the school is a park that is available to the public as well as for school-sponsored programs. Because the site of the school had previously been used for industrial purposes, and a concern of soil contamination was confirmed during development in 1999, the entire site is underlaid by a $17 million methane mitigation system, which will cost $250,000 a year to operate. This new school opened on September 2, 2008. View of a very small oil derrik surrounded by a fence, near or on the Belmont Learning Center field. A plaque reads: "Manley Oil Well #6". The downtown skyline is in the background, with the U.S. Bank Tower (the tallest, somewhat round skyscraper) visible in the cluster.
