This photograph is contained in one of two volumes by Dobbin titled "Album of San Francisco."
Portsmouth Plaza from east side of Kearny just south of Clay looking northwest. Corner of Kearny and Montgomery Ave. can be seen in distance. Rails of North Beach and Mission Railroad on Kearny. Text on photo: "289 Kearny Street, San Francisco." Reproduction of a stereo. Date estimated 1875 because Montgomery Avenue was cut through in 1875.
Text under photo: "The Plaza as it appeared in 1870 with its then famous Hack Stand. On the further end is Washington Street. The large building on the N.W. corner of Kearny and Washington was for many years occupied by a drug store. The entrance to the Bella Union Theatre was but one door further north on Kearny St. Note the sign in the lower right hand corner. 'UNCLE HARRIS' was a title adopted by a well known pawnbroker whose name was Litchenstein.
