Description
Key Words: St. Ambrose Church Helen Gipson was one of the first members of St. Ambrose, the first Episcopal Church in Claremont. After the church was founded in 1951, she served as a Sunday school teacher and sang in the choir. In St. Ambrose’s early years, they did not have a priest. She remembers several people who served as leaders of their congregation in its early years. Jack Miller, a professor at Pomona College, led the services before they had a priest. The first services were held in Pitzer Hall because the president of Claremont Men’s College, George Benson, was a founding member of St. Ambrose. Gipson grew up in Minnesota, but she moved to Claremont in 1952 and became a music teacher.
