Description
Scope/Content: 17th-century manuscript cookery and medical remedy book written in several different hands. The text is written from both ends and the front and rear paste-downs include the inscriptions "The First Part" and "The Second Part" respectively. The "first" part includes a long series of mixed medicinal and culinary recipes, followed by a second sequence (with an index) of culinary recipes only. The "second" part mostly consists of medicinal recipes in 3 different hands (3 distinct series of recipes, one with an index written in the same hand as the index in "The First Part"), and one section of culinary recipes in a fourth hand. Each part concludes on facing pages with "ffinis Anno Domini 1687."
Condition: Contemporary plain calf binding with gilt double ruled border; contemporary metal lock on upper cover with clasp remains on the lower cover; upper cover detached.
