Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Description
Emma Moonhe Cho was born in Stockton on March 11, 1933 to parents Tark Kim and Kyung Cha Hahn Kim. Her father Tark Kim was born in Korea in 1889 and both he and Kyung Cha fled to Mongolia due to politicial persecution, since Mr. Kim was a scholar. They eventually immigrated to the San Joaquin Valley, where they settled in Delano. Mr. Kim was presumably the first Korean minister in the Korean Methodist Church. Emma's sister Ada was born in 1934. Emma moved to Los Angeles in 1951 for college and attended Woodbury University in Burbank. She met and married Raymond Cho in 1953 and had four children. She lived in the San Fernando Valley, until she passed away in August of 1997. Tark Kim (right) and a friend on the campus of College of the Pacific (now the University of the Pacific).
