Image of the beach-side view of the Arcadia Hotel and bath house as seen from the ocean with part of a pier at left and houses at right in Santa Monica, California. The portion of the pier at left is the remains of the Los Angeles & Independence Railroad Wharf.
"1646. Arcadia Hotel, Santa Monica Cal. R.&E. Co Photo"--text, on item. "Sherman Foundation'--text, handwritten in pencil on verso. Title transcribed from item; date devised by cataloger based on history of the Arcadia Hotel which was completed in 1887 and demolished in 1909. This image is reproduced in Ernest Marquez's publication: Santa Monica Beach: a collector's pictorial history (Angel City Press, 2004), page 167. The hotel was built next to a steep cliff and shows only 3 stories on the Ocean Avenue side (seen in related items) and 5 stories on the beach side.
