Description
Front: Four men sitting (one is standing) in a somewhat disheveled office. Presumably the men are employees of the office. In the left center of the photograph can be seen a poster for "Wells Fargo & Co. Express." Within the room can be seen typewriters, a telephone, and electric hanging lights. A central heating stove sits in the middle of the room. It is unclear which of the many Wells Fargo locations this photograph was taken. Reverse: In pencil is written "Wells Fargo Express / S. Raymond(?)" Date is an estimate based on the clothing of the men in the photo. The 1902-1903 Pasadena City Directory lists "Wells Fargo & Co., Edgar D. Crumb, agt., 37 S. Fair Oaks ave.". The 1911 City Directory lists "Wells Fargo & Co. Express, Edgar D. Crumb, agent, 40 S. Fair Oaks Ave." In 1911 there were also Wells Fargo Express locations in Altadena and Sierra Madre. The business is listed at the 40 S. Fair Oaks address in the 1916-1917 City Directory as well. It is most likely that this photograph was taken at the S. Fair Oaks location, and that the business was located on this street, and not S. Raymond, as is implied by the writing on the reverse of the photograph.
