Description
Close-up view of the lettering and towering structure of the Crocker-Citizens Plaza, located at 611 W. 6th St., between Hope St. and Grand Ave. Designed by famed Los Angeles architect William L. Pereira, it was one of a handful of buildings built in the 1960s to surpass the 28-story height limit of City Hall, the city's first high-rise. The white tower was designed in a cruciform shape, which allowed more light and air to reach office spaces than a conventional square or rectangle. Another feature that the building boasted of was a vast parking lot; nine levels of underground parking designed to accommodate the increased independence of Angelenos on their automobiles. Construction begun in 1967 and the building opened for business on September 11, 1968.
