Carr Liang was a student or colleague of James W. Daily, engineering professor at CalTech. He received his masters degree in Mechanical Englineering in 1939. Sally (Sarah) was James' wife. Most of the other people he mentions in his letters are CalTech colleagues. Wen-hsin Wang was Carr Liang's aunt. The letters chronicle his trip back to and conditions in wartime China.
