Description
?Santa Monica Technical School was demolished in the 1950s and would become the site of Thelma Terry Center in Virginia Avenue Park. Born in 1907 in Santa Monica, Thelma Terry (nee Fletcher) was a graduate of Santa Monica High School and attended Howard University majoring in child development. She began her 40-year career in community recreation in 1928, becoming a leader in teen recreation, athletics and arts education in the Pico neighborhood. 'Miz Terry', as she was affectionately known, advised as many as nine youth clubs and organized The Terryettes, an all girl drill team in the 1950s, at a time when youth of color were not allowed in white dance studios. Terry died in 1979. In September 2014, a ceremony of the unveiling of the Thelma Terry Plaque was held at Virginia Avenue Park in front of the Thelma Terry Building.
