Description
Photo of the Chinese pagoda and the surrounding grounds in the gardens of Casa Grande. A young boy rides a tricycle in front of the pagoda, a young girl is sitting on the steps, and a man is standing on the steps to the right of the girl. On back of photo: Stamped in ink: "Please credit New Almaden Historical Society, Library of Historical Photographs." Stamped in ink: "Laurence E. Bulmore 1831 San Pedro Berkeley, California." Sheet of thin onion paper is attached to the back of the photo at the top. Typed on sheet: "Chinese Pagoda, Casa Grande Gardens New Almaden, California. This pagoda was a gift to the mining company (Barron-Forbes & Co.) from the Emperor of China in the middle 1850s. A delegation of Chinese had visited New Almaden to experiment in the making of vermilion and the gift was in appreciation of the courtesy shown the group. The picture was taken by R.R. Bulmore in the early 1880's and this print is from the original glass negative."
