Two women, Marilyn Simmons and Maria Cain, in old Western costume alight from a wooden carreta with the asistance of a man, also in period costume, at the centennial celebration commemorating the first raising of the American flag in Los Angeles. The carreta, or cart, was driven by a team of oxen and traveled for three days from San Pedro, following the route that Commodore Robert F. Stockton took. Twenty-five thousand people attended the event held on the steps of Los Angeles City Hall. Photograph dated August 13, 1946.
