Spade Cooley, born Donnel Clyde Cooley, was a Western Swing musician and band leader best known for his hit, 'Shame on You.' In addition to his music career, Cooley appeared in several Western films and hosted a television variety show, 'The Hoffman Hayride' also known as 'The Spade Cooley Show' which was broadcast on KTLA from the Santa Monica Pier Ballroom. In 1961, Cooley was convicted for the murder of his second wife, Ella Mae, and sentenced to life in prison. He died in 1969.
Photograph caption dated December 13, 1955 reads "More than 200 members of the Valley Independent Petrologists were on hand to see samples of unique crystals brought back from Mexico at a recent meeting held in Sepulveda. Watching Santa Claus as he handles the delicate formations are, left to right, Lou Harrison, program chairman; Jim Morgan, vice president; Spade Cooley, field trip chairman, and Maurice Habner, mineral expert."
