Portrait of David and Mary Hobson with two of their eleven children. David Hobson established the first Quaker Society of Friends in San Jose in 1861. The child on her mother's lap is Ruth, who was born in January of 1888, and died of diptheria in late October of that year, as did two of her brothers, Jessie and Charley (neither of whom is the boy on his father's lap in this photograph).
