Photograph was edited for publication purposes Pierre Salinger was born on June 14, 1925. He served as White House Press Secretary to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. Salinger served as a United States Senator in 1964 from August to December after the death of Clair Engle. He was defeated by Republican George Murphy for the Senate seat in November 1964. Salinger was manager for the Robert F. Kennedy presidential campaign and later became known for his work as an ABC News correspondent. He died on October 16, 2004. Photograph caption dated June 3, 1964 reads "Surrounded by hundreds of well-wishers, Pierre Salinger last night promised 'to move the country forward' as the mounting returns pointed toward his nomination in the Democratic Senate race. He greeted his joyful supporters at his election night headquarters in the Ambassador Hotel." Salinger defeated California State Controller Alan Cranston.
