Theodore Gier was born in Germany in 1860 to Henry and Marie (Behrens) Gier. Emigrated to the United States in 1881, settling first in Anaheim in 1882 (bought a ranch), in Oakland in 1883. Ran wholesale liquor business, Theodore Gier Wine Company of Oakland. Along with business, purchased a vineyard in Livermore (1893, second in 1901), vineyard in Napa (1898) and vineyard in St. Helene (1903). Married Ferdinande Hornung of Marysville in 1887. Had three daughters, Pauline Grace, Elsa Theresa (married James A. Boone) and Amelie Ferdinande. Died Jan. 4, 1931 in Alameda.
