Description
This circa-1890s photograph depics the Buffalo Brewing Co. at 21st Street, R Street and Q Street, later the site of The Sacramento Bee. The brewery opened in 1890. By 1894, a second branch was operating on Fifth Street between K and L. During the 1890s, they promoted traditional German seasonal beers and sold ice in addition to their alcoholic beverages, which they often claimed had medicinal qualities. They participated in the life of the city of Sacramento through charity drives, entertainment for military units, street fairs and parades. Before the elections of 1922, they ran a campaign against the Wright Act, also known as the “Prohibition Enforcement Act,” in hopes of preserving their business in alcohol. The following year, they began to sell Ruhstaller’s “Gilt Edge Lager,” along with their original brews. Despite continued marketing efforts, in 1924 they sold their cooperage, bottling plant and a truck. They operated for another 21 years before closing in 1945.
