Description
This circa-1942 photograph reveals the glowing interior of the Hippodrome Theater at 1013 K St. Just four years later, on Sept. 14, 1946, the marquee of the Hippodrome collapsed onto K Street, killing one person and injuring three. A demolition project on an adjoining building was blamed for loosening the marquee's support chain. In the chilly aftermath, legal settlements totaled roughly $70,000 and the theater was forced to lower the price of admission to attract customers. After three years of remarkable renovation, including the removal of the balcony that is so prominent in this photograph, the theater reopened with a new name, the Crest, and a giddy crowd of 5,000 for the release of "That Midnight Kiss," starring Mario Lanza and Katherine Grayson.
