Description
Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1889-1989
The explosion of youth soccer in the U.S.--and the phenomenon of "soccer moms"--can be traced to the city of Torrance, where Hans Stierle and other futbol-lovers created the American Youth Soccer Organization in 1964. AYSO preached participation; along with Title IX, the landmark legislation that mandated equal opportunities for female athletes, AYSO encouraged the dramatic growth of women's soccer in the U.S. (Future national team stars Carin Jennings and Joy Fawcett got their starts on local AYSO teams).
