Description
A grain storage facility and grain silos with a submerged rice field in the foreground is the subject of this circa 1960 postcard. In 1901, with the failure of wheat crops, farmers began a hunt for a new crop. “The search for a new crop was to bring rice into the old wheat lands and rice transformed the economy of the mid-valley.” World War I brought about increased demand which triggered a corresponding increase in acreage devoted to rice in the valley between the years of 1916-1919.
