Description
"We are glad the girls work is now going strongly, and one reason is we desire our Christian lads to marry Christian lads to marry Christian girls who by education and training have become fit helps for them. It is not only hard for them, but a very serious drag upon them if they have to marry heathen girls with no training, & with only slight knowledge of their husbands faith. Many of our lads are now buying their wives, and bringing them into the Boarding School for a years training before they marry them. This girl was married to Andrea, one of the senior teachers, - theirs was the first Christian marriage to be solemnised at Kikuyu." Portrait of young girl, Mbutu, who was married to Andrea, a senior teacher. ❧ "This Lecture was prepared by Dr J.W. Arthur in October 1911 on his voyage to Mombasa. The set of slides is the gift to the Kikuyu Mission of the Young Peoples Meeting at the Burgh Hall, Hillhead, of which he was for many years a member." A green folder marked 'Kikuyu' and containing lecture notes and relevant photographs to accompany lantern slides.
