Talk by Charles Handy on redefining the term "job" and the concept of work. Handy begins the talk discussing how, in his previous comments, he has called for the redefinition of work, as well as its redistribution. In order to effect this redefinition, Handy recommends that new words be used by people of influence, specifically a new word to replace “job,” and he suggests the word “portfolio.” Handy proceeds to discuss the topic of pensions and recommends that pensions be more obviously seen as deferred pay, and based on a working life of 37 years, before moving on to reflect on taxes and imports, suggesting that Britain must do all it can to reduce the need for reliance on imports. In order to bring this result about, he argues that enterprising, self-employed people start small mini-businesses, as a second job, alongside the uncoupling of big organizations, which would allow these smaller start-ups to thrive. Handy proceeds to recommend freer and more open education, continuing and otherwise, for all people, but also states that organizations should be taking more responsibility for their workers.
