Photograph of the front entrance of Lucea Church. The church is stone built and there are opened windows to either side of the entrance. Members of the congregation can be seen entering the building. It was in Lucea in 1827 that the Scottish Missionary Society established its second station in Jamaica. It was at one time forbidden for missionaries to preach in Jamaica following an Act passed by the Jamaica House of Assembly. The same Act also made it a criminal offence for slaves to enter a church and both men and women could be flogged for praying aloud.
