From the reverse of photgraph: Maryland Studio, 80 North Hill Avenue SY. 2-4126 Pasadena 4. Calif. date of phot derived from dates he was mayor. Walter L. Benedict was born January 25, 1908 in Pasadena, California. He first became interested in government while in college where he participated in student government stating, “My fraternity was deeply involved in campus politics and I was involved as a result.” He graduated in 1930 from the University of Southern California with a B.S. in business administration and then went into business with his father, eventually becoming manager and owner of his father’s plumbing firm. Walter Benedict not only followed his father into the family business, but into politics as well. His father, A. Ray Benedict was a previous mayor of Pasadena. Walter Benedict was first elected to the Pasadena Board of Directors in 1963, then was re-elected in 1967. In 1968, he was elected as vice-chairman, and then in 1970, he was elected as chairman (mayor). Mr. Benedict passed away in 2000 (Stovall, 1970).
