Description
Black and white lantern slide featuring an image of a cutting from the Nyasaland Times of September 1917, featuring a call to mission educated boys to join the King's African Rifles as salaried Signallers. Signallers are specialist soldiers responsible for military communications. In addition, boys would receive training as a general soldier, or askari (word for a local African soldier, based on the Arabic word for 'soldier'). An advertisement for interpreters of the Chinyanja (Chichewa) language (spoken by people of the large Chewa ethnicity) and the language of the Awemba (Bemba) peoples is also included. The advertisement is under the name of Lieutenant Colonel I H Soames, Chief Recruiting Officer of the King's African Rifles. This slide comes from a set on the activities of the King’s African Rifles battalions in Nyasaland. It was originally held by the Church of Scotland, and generated by J.W MacKay.
