The new highway grade below Ned's Gulch, Merced River Canyon showing a part of the area burned in 1924. Some of the trees were killed or injured by this fire but most will survive. If the canyon can be successfully protected from fire, the present scattered growth of trees will gradually seed up the slopes. Planting is needed only on exposed points where fires have been exceptionally severe or to cover the sides of cuts. The broken rock fills below the highway grade will not support any trees or shrubs until they have been gradually filled with earth. Planting on these in their present condition is out of the question
