Photograph caption dated May 16, 1950 reads "John Maldonado, 13, nephew of David Gonzales, and Mrs. George Harding, principal of Pacoima Elementary School look at a Congressional Medal of Honor awarded posthumously to war hero." The article partially reads "The faraway land was Luzon Island, Philippines, in the Pacific Ocean where on April 5, 1945, he braved deadly enemy crossfire to save the lives of three Army companions buried under a bomb's debris and at the same time give up his own."
