Description
2018-0787. Bust-length portrait. Born in Columbus, Ohio in 1827. Studied law; came to California in 1850, settling in San Francisco. Worked as lawyer; in 1851 was district attorney for Sacramento. In 1852 elected to U.S. House of Representatives. In 1860 elected Governor, served five days before being selected to serve in U.S. Senate. After leaving office, joined the London and San Francisco Bank Ltd where helped finance California Pacific and North Pacific Coast Railroad. Died in 1882.
