View of Sierra Highway in Palmdale, looking north from the center of town on December 10, 1955. The town sprouted like the proverbial beanstalk when aircraft firms moved into the area. Population was expected to be 40,000 by 1960, but topped out instead at 18,700 in 1960. In 1951 Palmdale had only 3000 residents. This photo compares with 00049863 taken in 1918, which focuses on the Palmdale Inn, here seen in the distance.
