Description
Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1899-1989.
The original Muscle Beach was located south of the Santa Monica pier, at a long, wooden platform constructed by the Works Progress Administration. There, the body was celebrated in its sunbaked glory as young men (and more than a few women) showed off their physical prowess by performing acrobatic and gymnastic routines. The original Muscle Beach disappeared in the late 1950s; the modern-day version is now located in Venice Beach. July 5, 1948.
