Description
This April 24, 1937, photograph shows units of the American Legion as they march easterly through the intersection of Ninth and K streets. The parade was the inaugural event for a convention that drew more than 5,000 legionnaires to Sacramento. It started at the local American Legion office at 718 I Street, proceeded down J Street to Fourth Street, then over to K Street, with the procession ending on Thirteenth Street. Other activities, included a beauty contest, a baseball game between the Lodi and Sacramento posts, and a drum and horn competition. Visible businesses are Montgomery Ward at 830 K Street, the S.H. Kress and Company store at 818 K Street, the S. Sturmer Diamond Company at 816 K Street, Leed’s women’s shoes at 814 K Street, the Green-Heyden Shoe Company and Buster Brown Shoes at 808 K Street, and Zukor's women’s furnishings at 726 K Street.
