Mahone (Corpsman Third Class). Supplementary material reads: "Gershon. City Desk. Illus. Korea hero awards. Commander William Shea, Jr., Commander, Minesweeper Squadron 5, inspects heroic crew of Destroyer Minesweeper Endicott which returned recently from Korea with record in minesweeping and gunnery combat that made her one of the 'fightingest ships in the Korean War'. Commander Shea is shown talking to John A. Peterson, Gunnersmate First Class in front row. Peterson, a 16-year Navy veteran won Presidential Citation while serving in Destroyer Spence under command of '30-Knot Burke' during battle off Savo Island, a battle in which Commander Shea also took part. Two long-range shots show Commander William Shea, Jr., reading citations before presenting Commendation Ribbon and Combat Distinguishing Device to left: Chief Hospital Corpsman Samuel Bernhardt, Jr., and Dores N. Mahone, Corpsman Third Class, for their work in caring for survivors of the two minesweepers Pledge and Pirate which were blown up by mines while sweeping Wonsan, Korea on 12 October 1950.
