A slightly elevated panoramic view of the oil field at Signal Hill. There are dozens of oil rigs, or derricks, most with sheds or circular structures nearby, distributed along dirt roads. A sign on one of the wells slightly left of center reads "S.S. Wortley ; well no. 2". Plumes of smoke rise from several of the oil rigs and their surrounding machinery in the center and on the left. The largely residential area in the background is probably Long Beach. There is a note in white just right of center, reading "Photo No. 21. By ; C.C. Pierce & Co. ; 1572 W. Pico L.A. ; 4-1-1931." Names attached to this photograph in the finding aid are E.M. Sullivan and Hub Petroleum Corporation.
