Description
Joseph L. Lewis purchased the 8200 acre parcel in 1906. Later, the ranch house and associated ranch buildings served as housing and workplaces for the first patients and staff at Camarillo State Hospital (CSH) in 1933. CSH officially opened in 1936. CSH used the farm and dairy until 1967, when the state sold the land as “surplus.” As of 2022, this location is home to The RAIN Project, Growing Works, and Casa Pacific (1722, 1732, and 1736 S. Lewis Road, Camarillo).
Panoramic view of the Joseph F. Lewis ranch in Camarillo. Visible are the main ranch house, the saddle/horse barn), the pump house, two horse barns, the blacksmith shop, tractor barn, and warehouse. The tack barn immediately behind/to the right of the main ranch house is the only structure extant in 2022.
