Photograph of the excavation of a sand hill near the site of the Hyperion Sewage Treatment Plant in Los Angeles, June 4, 1936. The sand hill is at center and has a large gorge dug out of the middle. A wooden sluice carries materials into the ocean, which is visible in the background. Scores of men are standing along the sluice and are shoveling sand. Building materials can be seen at right. The treatment plant is in the distance at center and is a large building with several archways around its perimeter. A tall smokestack can be seen at right.
