Description
In response to the spread of organized anti-Semitism in the United States during the 1930s, leaders of Los Angeles' Jewish community formed a special defense organization known as the Los Angeles Jewish Community Committee. The committee later changed its name to the Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles, Community Relations Committee. The collection documents the committee's efforts to combat prejudice and educate the public through cooperation with both Jewish and non-Jewish groups, from its formation in 1933 through the early 1990s.
This is a cover letter, prepared by Richard Gutstadt of the ADL, for a mass mailing of an advertisement entitled "Don't Let American Down." The advertisement had originally appeared in the Louisville, Kentucky Courier-Journal newspaper on July 12, 1940; the ADL was hoping to have the advertisment passed along to other newspapers. The letter states: "This represents a specific, constructive contribution which American newspapers can make to the solidarity of the people of this country in repudiation of the disintegrating influences of the FIFTH COLUMN." See the ad itself in this collection, # CRCms179. 11 x 8.5 in.
