Nineteen dignitaries and businessmen are shown in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the opening the newly paved extension of Victoria Street, on the northeast side of Dominguez Hills in Carson. Behind them, several cars are parked along both sides of this new street. The city of Carson, named after John Manuel Carson who was a key figure in the development of the South Bay in the 20th century, was incorporated as a city in 1968 when residents took to the polls and voted to do so by a margin of 2-1. On the same day, the citizens chose to name their city Carson over the name Dominguez (the two leading family names in the city's history). The city has been growing rapidly since; the estimated population in 2000 was 89,730.
