Description
The Port of Sacramento's nascent deep water channel is pictured here on January 18, 1954. The two silos are on the north bank of the channel. The earliest feasibility study on the Port was done in 1911 by Paul Norboe, an engineer for the State of California. Through a World War, the Great Depression and another World War, movement on the Port was frozen until 1946 when studies were finalized. A year later, the Sacramento-Yolo Port District was created and construction started, only to be stopped again for another four years because of the Korean War. After starting up work in 1956, it would take the District until 1963 to complete the job and, in June of 1963, welcome its first customer, Captain Tai-Hsiung Pan and the ocean freighter S.S. Taipei Victory.
