Description
Shown in circa 1995 is a horse-drawn carriage making its way by the Heywood Building, located in the Old Sacramento State Historic Park and at the southeastern corner of Second and J streets. Constructed in 1852, the building was one of the most substantial of a new breed of structures using "fire proof wood" or brick, which became increasingly popular after the fire of November 1857 eliminated over 70 percent of the city center.
