Description
A photograph of the first grade class of Wilma North at Crocker Elementary School in January of 1934. Also in the photograph is Principal Ella McCleery. McCleery began teaching in the 1880s and served as president of the Sons and Daughters of the Sacramento Pioneers, the War Service League of School Teachers, and the Northern California Teachers' Association. She was active in Sacramento public life, calling upon her fellow teachers to serve as nurses during the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic. She worked as vice principal of the Sutter School and principal of the John Muir School before receiving her appointment as principal of the Crocker School in 1930, a position she held until her retirement in 1938. She remained an active member of various fraternal organizations and social clubs until her death in 1955.
