Description
Title supplied by cataloger.
This crash occurred after an air traffic controller incorrectly cleared the plane, flying from San Jose, for landing. The captain delayed the go-around and the plane stalled. It then banked left and the wingtip touched the runway, causing the nose to go down and for the plane to skid down the runway. A fire then broke out, but only four of the 96 passengers and crew members sustained minor injuries.
Photograph caption dated February 19, 1981 reads, "The battered fuselage of Air California jet lies just off a runway at Orange County's John Wayne Airport."
