Description
Amassed before the gutted Comstock Building on July 3, 2003, are units of the Sacramento Fire Department. The fire started at 5 a.m., making short work of the historically vital building, constructed in 1861 and shown to the left. Soon after its construction as a variety store, in 1885, the upper floor of the building was remodeled to accommodate hotel rooms. Originally rising three stories above street level, the building's first floor was filled to avoid flooding.
