Description
On mount: "Baptist Tabernacle (L); Jewish Synagogue beyond, State Normal, center: Original Congregational Church, right." Featured in the "City with a Past" exhibit with caption, "San Antonio Street, looking east from Second Street to the State Normal School building, in 1876. The First Baptist Tabernacle is at the left with Temple Bikur Cholim, a Jewish synagogue, beyond. At the right of the photograph is the First Congregational Church. In the center is the original Normal School building, destroyed by fire on February 10, 1880." The original Congregational Church was organized on June 2, 1875, and stood on leased land between Second and Third Streets. It was later moved to a lot on Third Street, purchased February 24, 1880, and additions were made. Finally, the old building and its additions were all removed, to its later location.
