Photograph was edited for publication purposes Tom Coakley served as judge at the Mariposa County Superior Court from 1953-1969 and as Associate Justice of the California Court of Appeals from 1969 until his retirement in 1972. Prior to his legal career, he was a successful bandleader, playing with his orchestra in hotel ballrooms including the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood and the Palace Hotel in San Francisco. Photograph caption dated September 12, 1962 reads, "Thomas Coakley, left, Republican state attorney general candidate, pauses during Valley campaign swing to have coffee at gathering in his honor at Woodland Hills home of Mrs. Dean Petty.
