Description
Six adolescents and girls, and one boy, stand by a fountain in a park in their French fashions for 1888. The first girl on the left wears a deep blue dress with dark blue velvet-trimmed cuffs over a brown pleated skirt, of which we see only the hem. She wears a blue cape that fastens at the neck and drapes over her arms. The cape has dark blue velvet trim and is open to reveal a blue satin lining. She wears brown stockings and brown heeled shoes accented with brown bows. Her straw hat has a deep brown satin lining and has a large brown satin bow. Next to her stands a younger girl wearing pink and white. Her pink dress has a bodice with wide soft pleats vertically down the center. The sides of the bodice are lace trimmed in white, matching the cuffs and collar. An underskirt of white lace peeks out from under her pink box-pleated skirt, of which the hem is accented with thin red horizontal stripes. A wide sash is loosely tied around her waist and hangs down in two long knotted ends. She wears black stockings and black buttoned boots, and carries a small red and white cap or beret. She holds the arm of her older sister who wears a below knee length white dress with a motif of red overlapping circles. Both layers of the dress are of the same fabric. The outer layer of the dress has a jacket which falls below the waist with the skirt looped up. The under skirt falls in wide box pleats with narrow pleats on each side. A soft red velvet narrow sash is tied in a loose bow at te front. Matching red velvet forms the high collar and wide cuffs, with bows. The sleeves are narrow with slightly puffed shoulders She wears red stockings, black and brown boots, and yellow gloves. Her upswept hair is covered with a straw hat that is decorated with a wide red ribbon bow. An adolescent girl in the center of the illustration stands with her back toward the viewer and holds a rolling hoop. She wears a knee length red dress with a red and white plaid pleated skirt. Her skirt, collar, cuffs, and upper sleeves are made of red and white plaid, while the lower sleeves and bodice are solid red. The smooth princess bodice falls into a narrow vertical pleats at the hips with a side panel that continues down the length of the skirt. A braided cord tie with a jumble of red balls dangling from the waist accents the side panel of the dress. To complete the outfit the girl wears red stockings, black and brown heeled boots, and red ribbons in her dark hair. With her foot resting on the edge of a stone fountain, a girl points at her little brother's toy boat. The girl wears an outfit of tan and geometrically-patterned white and beige. The loose bodice has a patterned collar and long sleeves, with a panel of pattern the length of the sleeve. The skirt has loose box pleats tan with pattern in the interior of each pleat. A wide section of tan is gathered and draped below the waist, with a large full drape at the back in imitation of a bustle. To complete the outfit she wears tan stockings, brown buttoned boots, tan gloves, and a straw hat with small pink flowers, white ribbon, and greenery. The girl has her arm around the shoulders of her little brother, who is intent on floating his sailboat in the fountain. He wears a red sailor shirt and a dark blue jacket. His blue breeches end just below his knees, and his coat has gold buttons. He wears red socks, short black boots, and a blue flat brimmed hat. Next to them is a girl with her back to the viewer in a pink and burgundy plaid dress. The plaid bodice of the dress has folds that begin at the shoulders, then continue to the waist where they meet at a burgundy velvet panel accenting the dropped waist. The plaid skirt falls in pleats from below the burgundy panel to her calves, with extra lengths of plaid material draped at the back to suggest a bustle. The cuffs and collar are a matching burgundy velvet, and she wears burgundy stockings and a hat piled high with burgundy bows. She wears black heeled boots and carries a parasol.
